Notes:

A few weeks ago I was watching my Twitter and Identica feeds, when I saw a message pop up about a netlabel remix release by Planet Boelex – a name I am quite familiar with. Naturally, my curiosity was piqued, so I followed the link to the release page.

Turns out, Planet Boelex had put together a continuous mix of a selection of tracks from the first thirteen releases from a netlable called Soft Phase… One of several hundred netlables I had not encountered before.

I looked over the release, and saw a lot of names I've encountered over the years, including: Coax, Mikael Fyrek, Planet Boelex, Mosaik, bad loop, and Transient. Immediately, I knew I had to hear this release: I was exceptionally pleased with what I heard. So, I contacted the Soft Phase operator and asked if I could present this mix on my show. Not only were they happy to allow me to use this release, but they provided me a FLAC version of the mix to enable you to have the highest quality listening experience.

So, this week, I present without any interruptions the Introduction to Soft Phase.

Track Credits:

All tracks this week come from the Introduction to Soft Phase mix from the Soft Phase netlabel. You can find the Soft Phases website at: https://softphase.org

Fantastic Alternate Universes… Downloads: [MP3 | OGG | FLAC]

Notes:

Fat Chance Lester is a new group that has just released two albums under Creative Commons licenses. When I was asked to listen to them and consider doing a “release party” show on CerebralMix, I jumped at the chance. Why? The request came from Klaatu, who, as I have come to know, has an interesting range of music interests. I knew that even though I hadn’t heard of Fat Chance Lester before the music would be interesting and be something that listeners of The CerebralMix would likely find interesting.

So, this week, along with the Juiced Penguin OggCast, I am happy to present the release party for Fat Chance Lester. Their unique sound pulls on many influences in prog-rock and jazz to form a tribute to many of the pulp-fiction stories of the past that most geeks and nerds are familiar with. I hope you will have fun exploring Fat Chance Lester’s Fantastic Alternate Universes…

Intersections In Four Downloads: [MP3 | OGG | FLAC]

Notes:

This week’s show takes a slightly different format. As I was working my way through the back catalog of music, I found that I had a number of tracks from EP’s that were just waiting to be played. In particular, one EP was an ambient work from Abyssal Plains, and another a more Trip-Hop Jazz fusion oriented work.

While stylistically the works are very different, I found that they shared a common element: the number four.

In the first half of the show, we are going to hear the “Fourth Quadrant of the Mandala” by Abyssal Plains. The mandala comes from the Buddhist and Hindu belief systems. They are frequently used for meditation and as a spiritual teaching tool.

In the second half of the show, we are going to hear “The Hard Changing of the Seasons” by Zero V. This work builds on many of the past jazz masters to present a different way of looking at the changing of the seasons.

Notes:

This week we take a final journey into the Early Works of Andrew Cauthen.

Andrew is many things: a freegan, musician, philosopher, an extreme individual. A look through his blog contains articles about water cars, David Icke interview videos about humanity, James Fox on the BP Oil Spill, and how Food is the equivalent of crack.

Either because of or in spite of these opinions, Andrew’s musical works become more interesting. It becomes clear with just looking through a few of the releases he has made that he doesn’t follow conventions.

So, let’s take that last step into the unconventional soundscapes of Andrew Cauthen on The CerebralMix.

Just a Bunch of Music II

Downloads: [MP3 | OGG | FLAC]

Notes:

I’ve been compiling a lot of music to play on the CerebralMix, and I am preparing to start working with some more thematic material again. However, in the meantime this week I just went through the backlog of stuff that I’ve accumulated over the last several months to put together a set of music that is funky, rocks, and grooves.

Closing Notes

Special thanks go out to Amy for turning me on to Triplexity.

Next weekend is the Ohio Linux Festival, but that doesn’t mean that the Cerebral Mix will be taking a break. Instead, the show must go on, and things are already in place for Episodes 16 & 17.

That’s all for this week. I hope you will join me again next week for another adventure into the sounds between thoughts on The Cerebral Mix.
