Fat Chance Lester is a new group that has just released two albums under Creative Commons licenses. When I was asked to listen to them and consider doing a “release party” show on CerebralMix, I jumped at the chance. Why? The request came from Klaatu, who, as I have come to know, has an interesting range of music interests. I knew that even though I hadn’t heard of Fat Chance Lester before the music would be interesting and be something that listeners of The CerebralMix would likely find interesting.

So, this week, along with the Juiced Penguin OggCast, I am happy to present the release party for Fat Chance Lester. Their unique sound pulls on many influences in prog-rock and jazz to form a tribute to many of the pulp-fiction stories of the past that most geeks and nerds are familiar with. I’ve been compiling a lot of music to play on the CerebralMix, and I am preparing to start working with some more thematic material again. However, in the meantime this week I just went through the backlog of stuff that I’ve accumulated over the last several months to put together a set of music that is funky, rocks, and grooves.

The guitar is possibly one of the most unique instruments in music. It’s roots can be traced back approximately 3,300 years. Throughout history, there have been many names for instruments of similar construction (if not always similar in timbre and tone): oud, lute, cithara, and vihuela just to name a few.

The emergence of what could be seen as the modern acoustic (or classical) guitar occurred in about the 12th century in Europe. However, after the Baroque period, the guitar seems to have fallen out of favor until it reemerged in the 1800s.

The electric guitar dates from the 1930s. It’s first application was in the country swing bands of the period, allowing it to produce sound of equal volume to the rest of the band. Adoption of the electric guitar in jazz and rock assured that it was an instrument with a long road ahead of it.

This week, the first of a series of occasional shows, we present both acoustic and electric guitars in settings as diverse as progressive rock, ambient, jazz, death metal, blues, and more. So be prepared for just about anything in the world of the guitar, this week, on the CerebralMix.

Last year, an artist who goes by the stage name Ergo Phizmiz released a work on the Headphonica Netlable to rival all releases: a single 14 hour work called “The Faust Cycle”. I attempted to listen to the whole piece one hour per day for two weeks, and write a review as I listened to each segment.

I managed to succeed in listening to the whole piece, but after ten entries on the website life intervened and I never did get back to finish writing up the entries. However, the piece was very good, somewhat confusing at points, but always kept the listener on his or her toes with new musical inventions, or narrative twists and turns that would have made Jorge Louis Borges proud.

Recently Headphonica released a new work: The Faust Re.Cycled. This is a series of 22 remixes based on the Faust Cycle. The moment I saw this release I had to have it: at least in this form it is possible for me to include some pieces of The Faust Cycle in the CerebralMix. (Aside: some podcasts have used excerpts from The Faust Cycle, and at least one streaming radio show has played the whole piece…however, I felt neither approach would be beneficial to this audience.)

The idea of including some of the remixes in the CerebralMix started me thinking: what else would I play? What else could match up to it? Well, I think I’ve come up with an entertaining theme based around the character of Faust… A theme that I will let “speak” (or play) for itself.

My original “prototype” episode was thrown together fairly quickly, without a lot of thought given to the overall selection or sequencing of the pieces. However, there were quite a few good artists, and a lot of good music in the episode. I still feel that music deserves being shared.

This week we return to that episode with a twist: several pieces have been replaced: mostly with different tracks by the same artists, with one exception. And, the sequencing and mixing has been completely reworked.

So, sit back, listen, and have an “almost déjà vu all over again” experience.
